How to Clean and Maintain a Bioethanol Fireplace

One of the best things about a bioethanol fireplace is how little it asks of you. No ash to shovel, no chimney to sweep, no soot-stained hearth to scrub. But “low maintenance” doesn’t mean “no maintenance.” A small amount of regular care keeps the flame looking its best, extends the life of the burner, and makes sure everything runs safely for years to come. The good news is that none of it is difficult — and most of it takes less time than making a cup of tea.
Cleaning the Burner
The burner is the heart of a bioethanol fireplace, and it’s the part that benefits most from a little routine attention. How you clean it depends on whether you have a manual or a smart burner, but the basics are similar.
Manual Burners
Manual bioethanol burners are simple stainless steel trays — there are no moving parts, no electronics, and very little that can go wrong. After a few uses, you may notice a slight discolouration on the surface of the burner tray. This is completely normal. It’s caused by heat and minor residue from the fuel, and it doesn’t affect how the burner works.
To clean it, wait until the burner is completely cool — at least 30 minutes after the flame has gone out — then wipe the inside of the tray with a soft, dry cloth. If there’s visible residue, a cloth lightly dampened with bioethanol fuel works well. Avoid chemical cleaners, abrasive sponges, or steel wool. These can scratch or damage the stainless steel surface and may void the manufacturer’s warranty.
If you don’t plan to use the fireplace for a while, empty any remaining fuel from the burner before storing it. Bioethanol evaporates over time, so leaving it sitting in the tray is a waste — and keeping the burner dry during storage helps prevent any build-up of residue.
Smart Burners

Because they use vapour combustion technology (heating the fuel to a vapour before igniting it, rather than burning liquid directly), they produce even less residue than manual burners. The maintenance requirement is genuinely minimal.
The cleaning process is much the same: a soft cloth with a small amount of bioethanol fuel, wiped gently across the burning chamber. The key thing to watch for is the ignitor — it’s a small, delicate component, and you should take care not to knock or damage it during cleaning. Never use chemicals or abrasive materials. If the burner has an automatic filling system, the fuel lines and pump are sealed units that don’t need user maintenance. If anything feels off — unusual sounds, the pump not priming properly — it’s best to contact the supplier rather than attempt a fix.
Cleaning the Glass
Most bioethanol fireplaces feature a glass panel or screen, and keeping it clean makes a noticeable difference to how the fire looks. A cloudy or marked glass panel dulls the flame effect and takes the edge off the overall impression.
Let the glass cool completely before cleaning — tempered glass holds heat longer than you might expect. A standard ceramic hob cleaner or a non-ammonia glass cleaner works well. Spray it onto a soft cloth rather than directly onto the glass, then wipe in smooth, even strokes. For stubborn marks, a second pass with a clean, dry microfibre cloth brings up the shine.

Caring for the Housing and Surround
The body of the fireplace — whether it’s powder-coated steel, brushed stainless steel, or a painted finish — needs only occasional attention. A soft, damp cloth with a mild detergent is usually enough. Wipe down the exterior once every few weeks to remove dust and any fingerprints, particularly on dark or gloss finishes where marks show more easily.
Some discolouration of the paintwork near the burner area can occur over time, especially on lighter finishes. This is harmless residue from the flame and can usually be wiped away with a damp cloth. It’s a cosmetic issue, not a functional one — it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with the fireplace.
For wall-mounted or built-in installations, it’s worth checking periodically that the fixings are secure and that there’s no dust build-up in any ventilation gaps behind the unit. Dust accumulation around a heat source isn’t dangerous in itself with bioethanol fires (there’s no electrical element to overheat), but keeping the area clean is good practice and prevents the surround from looking neglected.
Storing Bioethanol Fuel
Bioethanol fuel is straightforward to store, but a few basic rules matter. Keep it in its original sealed container, in a cool area away from direct sunlight and any heat sources. It’s flammable, so it should never be stored next to radiators, boilers, or in direct line of a south-facing window.
Only use fuel with a purity of between 95% and 97% — this is the standard for indoor bioethanol fireplaces and produces the cleanest burn with the least residue. Fuel outside this range — whether too low or too high in purity — can cause more soot, an uneven flame, or a faint smell that correctly rated fuel simply doesn’t produce.
When refuelling, always do so with the fire extinguished and the burner cool. Wipe up any spills immediately with an absorbent cloth and make sure the area is completely dry before relighting. It sounds obvious, but spilt fuel on a warm surface is a genuine safety concern — take the extra 30 seconds to check.
What to Do If the Flame Changes
Over time, you might notice the flame looking slightly different — shorter, less even, or a different colour than when the fireplace was new. This is almost always caused by one of three things, and all are easy to address.
Residue build-up in the burner. A thorough clean of the burner tray usually restores the flame to normal. Even a thin film of residue can affect how evenly the fuel burns.
Fuel quality. If you’ve switched to a different brand of bioethanol, the flame may behave differently. Sticking with a 95–97% purity fuel from a reputable supplier keeps things consistent.
Airflow. Bioethanol flames are sensitive to draughts. If the fire is near an open window, a doorway, or an air vent, even a light breeze can make the flame flicker or lean to one side. This isn’t a fault — it’s physics. Adjusting the room’s airflow usually sorts it.
If the flame continues to behave unusually after checking all three, it’s worth contacting the manufacturer or supplier for advice. With smart burners, irregular flame behaviour can occasionally indicate a sensor issue that needs professional attention.
