Why Fuel Type Is the Deciding Factor

The question people are really asking is: how much heat rises above this fire, and will it damage my television? The answer depends entirely on how the fire generates and directs heat. Television manufacturers typically specify a maximum ambient operating temperature of around 35°C to 40°C. Sustained heat above this threshold — not just peaks during the fire’s warmest moments, but the average temperature the TV sits in while the fire is running — is what causes long-term damage. Overheating shortens the lifespan of the display panel, affects the electronics, and in some cases voids the manufacturer’s warranty. The goal, for any TV-above-fire installation, is to ensure the ambient temperature at the television’s mounting height stays comfortably within that range.

Electric fires are the simplest case. The flame effect itself is produced by LED lighting and produces no heat whatsoever. This means that a built-in or wall-mounted electric fire, correctly installed, poses no meaningful thermal risk to a TV mounted above it.

The practical considerations for electric are almost entirely aesthetic rather than thermal: clearance for visual proportions, cable management, and ensuring the TV bracket is fixed to a structurally sound surface rather than directly into the firebox surround. As a category, electric fires are the default recommendation for any installation where a TV above the fire is part of the brief from the start.

Water Vapour Fireplaces: Zero Heat, Total Flexibility

Water vapour fires produce no heat at all — the flame effect is created by ultrasonic mist illuminated by LED lighting. There is nothing rising above the fire except cool water vapour, which disperses immediately. From a TV-compatibility standpoint, this is the most straightforward option of all: there is simply no thermal risk to consider.

The only caveat worth noting is humidity. In a very small or poorly ventilated room, a water vapour fire running for extended periods can marginally increase ambient moisture levels. This is unlikely to affect a TV in normal conditions, but it’s worth being aware of if the installation is in an unusually confined space. In a standard living room, it is not a practical concern.

Bioethanol Fireplaces: Possible, With the Right Setup

Bioethanol is where the question requires more thought. Bioethanol burns with a real flame, and real flames produce real heat — including convected heat that rises. How much heat reaches the TV depends on three things: the burner size, whether the fire has a closed top, and the clearance distance between the top of the fire and the bottom of the television.

Closed-top vs open-top burners

This is the most important variable. A bioethanol fire with a closed top — where the burner sits inside a fully enclosed housing with a glass front — contains and redirects heat far more effectively than an open-top design. With a closed-top built-in bioethanol fire, the heat exits forward rather than rising freely above the unit, and the clearance required above the fire is significantly reduced. Open-top wall-mounted and freestanding designs allow heat to rise more directly upward, which demands greater vertical clearance to the TV.

Clearance distances to follow

As a general guide for bioethanol installations: a closed-top built-in fire typically requires a minimum of 40–50 cm between the top of the fire and the bottom of the TV. An open-top wall-mounted bioethanol fire needs more — a minimum of 100 cm above the burner is the standard safety clearance from the wall, which in most cases rules out a TV directly above an open-top unit at comfortable viewing height. Always check the specific clearance requirements in the manufacturer’s installation guide for the model you’re considering, as these vary.

Heat deflectors and shelves

Where a TV above a bioethanol fire is planned as part of a built-in media wall, a non-combustible heat deflector shelf fitted between the fire and the TV is standard practice. This redirects rising heat forward into the room rather than allowing it to continue upward toward the screen. For a built-in installation, this is typically incorporated into the media wall design at the build stage — a shelf of non-combustible material, extending at least 100 mm beyond the width of the fire on each side. It also provides a useful visual break between the fire and the television.

Electric and water vapour fires both accommodate a TV above with minimal restriction — the only real constraints are aesthetic. Bioethanol can work well in a built-in closed-top configuration with a heat deflector shelf and the correct clearance, but it requires more careful planning and the installation needs to be designed with the TV position in mind from the start.

What doesn’t work, as a general rule, is mounting a TV directly above an open-top freestanding or wall-mounted bioethanol fire at standard viewing height. The clearance required to keep the TV in a safe thermal range simply doesn’t leave enough wall space for a comfortable arrangement. If a freestanding bioethanol fire is what you want, position the TV on an adjacent wall or in a different part of the room entirely.

One final point that applies regardless of fuel type: cable management. Any wiring running near or behind the fire — power cables, HDMI leads, anything connecting the TV to other equipment — should be routed well clear of the fire housing and any area that gets warm during operation. This applies even with electric fires, where the fan heater area can reach temperatures that would degrade unprotected cables over time.
